Heidi Dunbar is a Family Nurse Practitioner who provides Functional Medicine at Strawberry and Sunshine Healing Centre. She brings years of clinical experience in perinatal care, women’s health, family medicine, and international health to her work.
Heidi began her career as a Registered Nurse in 2002 after completing her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Victoria. She spent extensive time working as a perinatal nurse at BC Women’s Hospital. At that time while volunteering as a nurse internationally, she led diverse teams of healthcare professionals to various developing nations. These experiences fueled a desire to know and do more to help patients and their health, motivating the completion of her Master’s in Nursing, as a Nurse Practitioner from the University of British Columbia.
Licensed by the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia as a Family Nurse Practitioner, Heidi has full authority to diagnose, treat and prescribe investigations and medical treatments. Additionally, she is certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner. She began teaching with the University of Northern British Columbia in 2011 in both the undergraduate and Nurse Practitioner programs. She enjoys sharing her passion with students, while learning from their vast experiences.
Heidi’s passion for Functional Medicine was fueled in a primary care setting, while sitting with patients, giving them answers about their health concerns, that wouldn’t have been good enough for her family nor herself. The strong sense of advocacy she had gained from nursing mixed with an intense hunger to understand the bigger picture, was the perfect foundation to prepare her to practice Functional Medicine – the medicine of “why”, not “what”. Heidi is a graduate of the prestigious Institute for Functional Medicine Certification Program. The achievement of the Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner designation came with successful completion of multiple training courses, as well as stringent written and case study examinations.
Heidi’s unique training in Functional Medicine has prepared her to identify, treat and prevent root causes of chronic disease and complex health symptoms. As such she is able to provide proactive, personalized patient-centered care and empowers patients to take an active role in their own health. She continues to attend multiple continuing medical education programs each year to help keep her knowledge up to date on the latest research and technology in conventional and functional medicine.
